How Search Engines Work

Search engines collect data from individual databases and from the World Wide Web. Major search engines are designed to sort data from their databases and present search information in a relevant manner. After the data is sorted it is presented according to the query chosen by you, "the searcher", in an orderly fashion.

The major search engines can sell you "Sponsored Links" in the category of your choice. They are listed directly above where the Internet search listings start.  These listings are highlighted in green on our images above. Another option you can buy from a search engine is a "Pay Per Click" ad in the category of your choice. The "Pay Per Click" price is a set price and you pay everytime someone clicks your link. These listings are highlighted in yellow above and are costly. It is best to advertise on all 3 major search engines in the category of your choice. However, this type of marketing can get very pricey for a small to medium sized business.
The Surflocal Business and Shopping Network is designed to promote it's clients, even ahead of itself, on the World Wide Web. (highlighted in pink above)

When the major search engines are sorting data, our clients are presented in a accurate and qualified manner based on the criteria requested by the major search engines. One of the wonderful results of marketing through the Surflocal Business and Shopping Network is that any search engine that queries from these data pools is able to retrieve your information. This occurs because Surflocal has properly fulfilled the criteria requirements needed to be presented. (highlighted in pink above)

Surflocal has been in the business for 12 years and has strictly followed the guidelines set forth by the major search engines and the international web ethics communities set up to bring congruency on the World Wide Web. Our webmaster is a member of several web ethics communities and is constantly reviewing search engine submission guidelines to ensure we are always performing ethically in the "white hat" method.

Surflocal.Net is a National Business and Shopping Network that is a powerfully designed Website & Coupon Creator Program to provide premier local search engine placement by placing an ad in our network. Our one-of-a-kind program allows businesses to legitimately advertise on a local, regional and national level. We can also provide direct access from 2200 cities across the Surflocal Business and Shopping Network directly to your website.

Because we do not try to "cheat" the search engines by deceptive tactics we are trusted to present our clients in a professional manner. The following information is included to educate you about improper tactics that the search engines look for. If you are caught using these tactics for better search placement, you could be banned from one or all of the search engines.

A few examples of these deceptive tactics are:

  • Placing clients in areas in the search database that are not applicable,
  • Spamming the search engines with "Web Submission Software" such as Web Position Gold or any other search engine "magic disk" to try and spam the search engines for better listings.
  • "Cloaking", a search engine optimization technique in which the content presented to the search engine spider is different from that presented to the users' browser. "Cloaking" is often used as a spamdexing technique, to try to trick search engines into giving the relevant site a higher ranking; it can also be used to trick search engine users into visiting a site based on the search engine description which turns out to have substantially different content.
  • Using database driven programming to make one website appear to be thousands of individual websites
  • "Doorway pages", web pages that are created for spamdexing, this is, for spamming the index of a search engine by inserting results for particular phrases with the purpose of sending you to a different page, usually with completely different content.
  • "Keyword stuffing", when a web page is loaded with keywords in the meta tags or in content repeatedly. Another method is to hide text out of view of the visitor by coloring to blend with the background. Inserted text sometimes includes words that are frequently searched, even if those terms bear little connection to the content of a page, in order to attract traffic to advert-driven pages. Also repeating keywords in the Meta tags, and using keywords that are unrelated to the site's content.
Our clients are automatically recognized on the World Wide Web and are ready to be sorted by the major search engines and delivered to the end user as a qualified listing.
